If you’ve ever wondered what Labubu is and why it’s so popular, you’re in the right place. This guide covers the basics you need to know about Labubu, including a little bit of background with the creator.
01 – The Origins of Labubu
Labubu’s journey began in 2015 when illustrator Kasing Lung created The Monsters, a story series inspired by Nordic mythology. This whimsical monster tribe includes characters like Zimomo, Tycoco, Spooky, and Pato—but Labubu quickly became a fan favorite. Its popularity skyrocketed even further when Blackpink’s Lisa started accessorizing her bags with Labubu charms.

02 – What Is Labubu?
Labubu is an elf character and, according to the original books, actually a girl. She is known for her distinctive high, pointed ears, nine serrated teeth, and lack of a tail. Her mischievous, kooky expression makes her instantly recognizable. To date, Labubu has been released in over 300 colors, shapes, and sizes.

03 – Pop Mart and the Rise of Labubu Collectibles
In 2019, Kasing Lung entered into an exclusive licensing agreement with Pop Mart, a toy company famous for its collectible blind box toys. Blind boxes are sealed packaging that keeps the toy’s identity a mystery until opened—adding an element of surprise to every purchase.
04 – The Must-Have Labubu Charms
Labubu charms have become highly sought-after plush pendants, often used as bag accessories. There are currently two main versions available:
05 – Version 1 (V1): The Monsters – Tasty Macarons Vinyl Face Blind Box
First launched in October 2023, these standing-position Labubu charms feature adjustable heads, arms, and feet. They measure 8 cm × 17 cm × 7 cm and come with a gold-tone ring clasp for easy attachment.
